Why is high Tg PCB the first choice for extreme environments

High Tg PCB means that when the temperature rises to a certain range, the substrate changes from a “solid state” to a “rubber state”. This temperature point is called the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the circuit board.

Tg represents the temperature, measured in degrees Celsius, required for a material to change from “solid” to “rubbery”. Typically, materials have a Tg above 130°C, with high Tg typically above 170°C and medium Tg around 150°C. PCBs with a Tg of 170°C or higher are often referred to as high-Tg PCBs.

    FR4
    FR4 is a board composed of fiberglass cloth + epoxy resin. It is an epoxy glass laminated composite material known for its flame-retardant properties. FR4 has high resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations, which is very important for high Tg PCBs. It dissipates heat efficiently and ensures the stability of conductors and dielectric materials.

    IS410
    This laminate and prepreg material achieves a Tg value of 180°C. It can withstand multiple temperature fluctuations and passes high-temperature welding tests up to 288°C. IS410 is also suitable for lead-free soldering in PCB industrial production.

    IS420
    This high-performance epoxy material excels in thermal performance, with a lower coefficient of thermal expansion compared to standard FR4 materials. Its ability to block UV radiation makes it useful for automated optical inspection in PCB manufacturing and is suitable for applications requiring high stability.

    Venture Isola-G200
    This is a polyimide/triazine (BT) and epoxy resin hybrid material that outperforms most BT epoxy materials in terms of thermal properties, mechanical strength, and electrical properties, making it an ideal choice for applications requiring reliability. This makes it a common choice for high-density multi-layer PCBs that require reliability.
