PCB GND is an important component in electronic circuit boards, its role is to provide a current return path and eliminate interference. Proper design of the PCB GND is the key to ensuring that the circuit works properly.

This article will introduce the design principles and considerations of PCB GND to help readers understand how to properly design PCB GND.

    The definition of PCB GND

PCB GND, referred to as ground, refers to the current return path of an electronic circuit board. It is connected to the negative terminal of the power supply in the circuit and plays the role of connecting electronic components, conductive wires and external devices. Through PCB GND, the current of electronic components can be smoothly reflowed, thus ensuring the normal operation of the circuit. At the same time, PCB GND can also play a role in shielding electromagnetic interference.

    1. Single point grounding principle
During the PCB design process, the principle of single point grounding should be followed as much as possible. That is, connecting all ground wires to a common location to avoid the formation of ground at multiple locations to reduce interference and asymmetry of the return path.

    2. Arrangement of GND plane
In PCB design, an independent plane should be planned as much as possible for the layout of GND. This plane can serve as a path for the return of current and act as a shield against electromagnetic interference. At the same time, in order to avoid interference, the GND plane should be kept at a certain distance from the signal line and power line as much as possible.

    3. Layered cabling
For large and complex boards, it is recommended to design GND in a layered way. GND can be divided into multiple levels and routed according to different circuit parts, thereby reducing the asymmetry of the return path and better shielding interference.

    4. Separation of GND and signal line
In PCB design, GND should be separated from the signal lines as much as possible to avoid mutual interference caused by them sharing the same plane of the same layer. GND can be separated from the signal lines by dividing the GND plane and using hierarchical routing.

    Precautions of PCB GND

    1. Avoid excessive GND reflux path
In board design, the length of the GND reflow path should be minimized. An excessively long reflow path will cause the impedance of the reflow current to increase, affecting the stability of the circuit. Therefore, in the design process, the layout of the ground wire should be reasonably planned and the return path should be as short as possible.

    2. Prevent GND reflow interference
The current in the GND return path may cause electromagnetic interference and affect the normal operation of the circuit. To eliminate this interference, filter inductors and capacitors can be added to the return path for isolation and filtering.

    3. GND and signal line crossing
During PCB routing, cross-traversal of GND and signal lines should be avoided. Since the signal line carries the signal and GND acts as a shield, crossing the two will cause the signal to interfere with each other. Therefore, the path of GND and signal lines should be reasonably planned during the wiring process to minimize the possibility of cross-crossing.

    Conclusion

Through the introduction of this article, I believe that you have a deeper understanding of the meaning, design principles and precautions of PCB GND. Proper design of PCB GND is very important to ensure the normal operation of the circuit and prevent interference.
